Since the adoption of the Millennium Declaration, civil society organizations (CSOs) have strived to contribute and influence the discourse relating to the Millennium Development Goals. Through this process, the view points emanating from these groups have varied: some have expressed disappointment in the lack of political commitment coming from governments, while others have remained more hopeful as to the achievement of the Goals by 2015. Whether critical or optimistic, it is evident that the nature of CSO engagement has served to enrich the dialogue and debates surrounding the Millennium Development Goals.

It is in this spirit that this section will showcase the reflections, research and campaigns originating from the work of CSOs. The reflections and research incorporate CSO commentaries, statements, and critical analysis regarding the working framework established for the MDGs, but it also includes some introspection as to the role of civil society organizations in the MDG decision-making process. As for the campaigns , promotional websites are listed and cover both national and international undertakings organized by CSOs. This may serve as a means for those interested to get directly involved in campaigns, coordinate efforts or simply learn more on what's happening in different regions across the globe.

In September 2004, over 750 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) -- including 1,800 NGO representatives -- from across the globe took part in the 57th Annual NGO Conference in New York organized by the United Nations Department of Information (DPI) in partnership with the NGO/DPI Executive Committee. Through a series of plenary sessions and interactive workshops, the conference aimed to galvanize civil society action towards the Millennium Development Goals.

The Millennium+5 NGO Network is an informal grouping of NGOs brought together by CONGO and the NGO DPI Executive Committee. The Millennium +5 NGO Network is organizing a series of NGO consultations that will take place at a number of UN Commissions and fora between January and June 2005, including the Commission on Social Development, Commission on the Status of Women , the Commission on Human Rights, the Commission on Sustainable Development, the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and other key gathering points for different civil society networks.

Groups are encouraged to bring to the open forums their priority areas for action that they wish governments to act upon at the Millennium +5 Summit in September. These various inputs will be brought together into a compilation document to be submitted to the General Assembly in June.  To join the Millennium + 5 Network email listserv go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/millenniumplus5ngonetwork/.

Campaigns

From Johannesburg to Boston, people are mobilizing around the Millennium Development Goals by getting involved in campaigns to raise awareness and build political will for the achievement of the Goals by 2015. We invite you to be part of this global movement. Here are a few suggestions on how you can start campaigning:

  • For a hands-on approach for advocating for the MDGs, please refer to the United Nations Development Programme's Blue Book, which includes, among other things, communication strategies on how to effectively deliver your message on the MDGs.
  • If your organization is planning activities or events, we encourage you to connect with the Millennium Campaign, which is aiming to inspire a global movement by working at the national and international levels to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. The campaign is currently working with youth groups, civil society organizations, faith-based groups, celebreties and other stakeholders to hold developing and developed countries accountable to their promises.
  • Below is a list of campaigns spearheaded by civil society organizations. Please contact these organizations if you are interested in joining these specific campaigns.
