OHCHR calls for civil society contributions on discrimination against women in family and cultural life (Deadline 31 July)

In 2014, in accordance with its mandate, the UN Working Group on Discrimination against Women in Law and in Practice intends to research, as a priority, the issue of discrimination against women in law and in practice in family and cultural life. Within this broad area of research, the Working Group will pay particular attention to equality and non-discrimination in marriage, rights and responsibilities in the family and participation in all aspects of cultural life including arts, sports and cultural activities. This thematic research will culminate in the report that the Working Group will present to the Human Rights Council in June 2015.

Small Island Developing States Conference Update: The Road to Apia, Samoa

arton4445.jpgThe preparatory process leading to the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States taking place in Samoa from 1-4 September is well under way. The final PrepCom will take place from 23-27 June at UN Headquarters, and a Pre-Conference Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum will take place on 28 August in Samoa. A Major Groups and other Stakeholders steering committee is tasked with preparations and outreach. The overarching theme of the Conference is "The sustainable development of Small Island Developing States through genuine and durable partnerships."

arton4449On the occasion of Structured Dialogue 3 on the Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM) convened by the President of the General Assembly on 4 June, the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS) and ETC Group, an international civil society organization specializing in technology issues, conducted a side event on the subject from 1:00-2:45pm in Conference Room 9 in the Conference Building (Floor 1b), UN Headquarters. GA High-level Meeting: “Achieving Poverty Eradication through Full Employment and Decent Work for All in the Post-2015 Development Agenda” (23 May)

arton4452On 23 May 2014, the UN General Assembly organized a High-Level Meeting on the theme “Achieving Poverty Eradication through Full Employment and Decent Work for all in the Post-2015 Development Agenda.” The meeting included a half-day plenary session in the morning, and a high-level interactive, multi-stakeholder panel discussion in the afternoon. Participants concluded that growth-driven quality jobs are key to reducing poverty post-2015.

World Conference on Youth 2014 focuses on mainstreaming youth in the post-2015 development agenda

arton4444From 6-10 May, theWorld Conference on Youth 2014(WCY) took place in Colombo, Sri Lanka with a focus on “mainstreaming youth in the post-2015 development agenda.” This event brought together over 1,500 young people from over 145 countries (including over 350 from marginalized backgrounds), representatives of Member States, including 28 Ministers of Youth, UN officials, representatives of international and regional organizations, academics, corporate leaders and other relevant stakeholders to discuss the youth agenda for the post-2015 processes. This is the first time the World Youth Conference was hosted by an Asian country and produced a joint outcome document between States and youth.

Member States Host Event on "Universal Health Coverage: How to Implement and Measure it"

arton4437Building upon the momentum of discussions about the post-2015 global development framework, the Permanent Missions of France and Japan to the UN, in collaboration with the Permanent Missions of Thailand, Benin and Chile, hosted an event on 14 April 2014 to address "Universal Health Coverage: How to implement and measure it – Country Case Studies and Lessons." The discussion, which brought together representatives from Member States, UN agencies and civil society, emphasized that UHC is a global goal that every country should achieve. Michael Myers, Managing Director of the Rockefeller Foundation and moderator of the panel, suggested that UHC was once considered a distant dream, but is now an idea whose time has come.
